When you purchase a Tripadvisor Ad, we show it only to the most qualified diners—the people who are already searching for restaurants like yours. Here’s a rundown of exactly where on the site diners will see it.
Every month, Tripadvisor sees over 200 million searches from people looking for their perfect place to eat.* With Tripadvisor Ads, you can capture the attention of these diners to drive them directly to your listing page.
When we show your Ad, it doesn’t show to every single potential diner. It only shows to the most qualified potential diners—meaning, those people who are searching for restaurants just like yours in your area. For example, if you run a Mexican restaurant in Brooklyn and someone searches for “Best Mexican food in New York City,” and you’ve purchased a Tripadvisor Ad, then that person will likely see your Ad.
But that’s just one example. There are several different places a potential diner can see your ad appear on Tripadvisor:
When someone searches for restaurants in your location, they could see your restaurant first if you fall into a particular category like Fine Dining or Local Cuisine. So if you’re ranked #11 for your category in a given location, by purchasing a Tripadvisor Ad, your restaurant Ad could appear before the restaurant ranked #1 in your category in your location.
In the example above, by searching generally for restaurants in London, you can see an ad for Smith’s Place, a fine dining establishment, in the Fine Dining category.
When someone searches for restaurants in your location, the second place they could see your Ad is first in the general list of best restaurants. You can find this by scrolling down on your location’s home page until you see a list of restaurants based on the ranking. So if you’re ranked #22 in a given location, if you purchase a Tripadvisor Ad, you could be seen above the restaurant ranked in the #1 spot.
In the example above, The Spot may not be in the top spot for all restaurants in London—but with a Tripadvisor Ad, a qualified searcher could see them first.
Tripadvisor restaurant browsers have many options to narrow down their search to find the best restaurant for them. Each one of these filters — from cuisine types like Indian food to amenities offered like parking — results in a refined list of options on Tripadvisor where your Ad could show if your restaurant falls under one of these categories.
The example above shows Indian sit-down restaurants in London, for example. You can see that the Garden Restaurant shows above the #1 Indian sit-down restaurant in London because they purchased a Tripadvisor Ad.
Here’s another example. If someone is searching for a restaurant that caters to their dietary needs, like vegetarian food, that’s another filtered category page where a restaurant fitting that profile could show. Here, The Vegan Pavilion is shown before the #1 vegetarian restaurant because they purchased a Tripadvisor Ad.
Your Ad could show up for someone looking on the Tripadvisor mobile app for a place to eat near them. If a traveler exploring a particular neighborhood searches on their phone for local restaurants, they can simply pull up the Map View showing restaurants nearby. And if you’ve purchased a Tripadvisor Ad, your restaurant’s ad may display within that map.
When someone is trying to decide which restaurant they want to book, they often look at several different restaurants within the same category before making their decision. To capture the attention of these diners, your Ad could appear on another restaurant’s detail page that is similar to your own. This can show in different places on the detail page.
You can see that in this example, while looking at a fine dining establishment in Athens, The Restaurant shows as the first in that list of similar recommended restaurants because they purchased a Tripadvisor Ad. This can show in different places on the detail page.
In addition to showing above the search results, your Ad may also show in the second position on any given search result. This means that diners browsing for restaurants may see two Ads before the top ranked restaurant in that list.
You can see that in this example, while looking at restaurants in Paris, The Café shows as the second in the list of similar restaurants because they purchased a Tripadvisor Ad. This gives them another chance to get more qualified traffic to their Tripadvisor listing.
In addition to showing above the search results, your Ad may also show in the fifth position on any given search result when someone is searching on a mobile device in a web browser. This means that as diners scroll down the list of restaurants, they have another opportunity to see your Ad.
You can see that in this example, while looking at restaurants in Paris on a mobile device, Le Café shows as the fifth in the list of similar restaurants because they purchased a Tripadvisor Ad. This gives them another chance to get more qualified traffic to their Tripadvisor listing.
Note that this placement is only available on mobile devices when a diner is using a web browser. More placements coming soon!
The best way to make sure your Ad is showing to the best possible diners? Make sure your restaurant’s cuisines, amenities and services are correctly listed on Tripadvisor. You can do this by logging into the Management Center and selecting “Cuisines and Amenities” under the “Manage Listing” tab. From there, you can choose up to five cuisine categories, which meals you serve, and any amenities you offer.
If you’re not sure what your Ad will look like, you can see for yourself by using our Preview tool. Any time your campaign is running, choose “Preview your Ad” under the “Advertising” dropdown in the Management Center to see your campaign.
